Website Segmentation Surveys: Ask Questions You Can Act On
A segmentation survey is valuable when each answer changes how you treat the visitor later.
Define the downstream action
Before writing a question, state what you will do differently for each answer. If the answer changes nothing, remove the question.
Prefer simple language
Ask in the visitor’s vocabulary, not your internal segmentation taxonomy. Translate the answer into internal fields behind the scenes.
Place questions at useful moments
Ask when context makes the question easy to answer: after a relevant article, during onboarding, before a recommendation or when choosing between paths.
Store and reuse answers
A good survey should not become a dead-end dataset. Use answers to improve later forms, content, email and offers where appropriate.
Avoid sensitive overreach
Only collect information needed for the experience. Keep the purpose understandable and do not surprise visitors with how answers are later used.
