Behavioral Segmentation for Websites
Behavioral segmentation groups visitors by what they do rather than only who they are. It is useful when behavior reliably changes the best next step.
High-value behaviors
Repeated pricing views, visits to a product category, completion of a key resource, return frequency and prior conversions can be more useful than arbitrary click counts.
Behavior is evidence, not certainty
A visitor reading three advanced articles may be experienced—or simply researching. Use behavior as a probabilistic signal unless the action clearly establishes state.
Combine with known data
Behavior becomes more powerful when paired with lifecycle or declared intent. A customer viewing pricing may mean something very different from a prospect doing the same thing.
Set expiration rules
Interests and intent decay. Decide whether a behavior should matter for a session, a week or indefinitely, and avoid stale experiences that follow people forever.
Measure by outcome
If the segment exists to trigger a CTA or offer, track whether the changed experience improves that outcome rather than celebrating audience size.
